My old dog, Vala aka Balien SchH3 AWD1 FH1 FH2 CGC, during her FH2 (advanced tracking)

I started training dogs in 1983 with a difficult male Doberman, named Apollo, that I titled to an AKC Companion Dog title (first level obedience). He did not enjoy training and the methods of the day did not make the work "fun" for human or dog. Since Apollo, my understanding of training and working with the dog's natural drives, and desires to work, have evolved. I learned to fit the training to the dog, using all four quadrants of operant conditioning*, while not trying to force any dog into a "one size fits all" program. I have titled 2 German Shepherds, my passion, in AKC obedience and 7 in the three phase sport/test of Schutzhund (SchH), now called IPO, with multiple high in trials, high obedience and high tracking.

I have assisted and substituted for classes in puppy kindergarten, starting agility and foundation obedience. I have also taught private lessons in basic obedience for family companions and foundation obedience for schutzhund/IPO competition and tracking. I was the training director of a large SchH/IPO club for 7 years helping direct the training programs of our members.
